So here I am, writing just to see myself write, which is fine. I can at
least get sh*t off my chest that’s bugging me or I just want to write about.
This time, it’s pretty simple – Secrets behind my novels. I’ll be putting
these up in my homepage also so there’s that whole cross-posting thing for
people to dink with.
Anyway, on with the show with limited commercial interruptions…
I write. I write a lot. I (personally feel) write very well. I deal
predominantly with science fiction, fantasy, horror, and certain types of
adventure (superheros, etc.) It’s been a b*itch to get published, but I’m
getting there. E-published and print-on-demand I can’t complain about. At least
I have that above so many other writers that are struggling just to find a
niche. That, however, isn’t what I’m wanting to talk about.
There is an aspect of my current work that includes, and quite heavily I
might add, the animal kingdom. Yeah, I’m one of THOSE people. I am a
proponent for animal rights and against animal abuse, poaching, and the like.
Which is why animals feature prominently in “Mythidria.” I feel that there is an
undeniable tie amongst our people and the animal kingdom that we cannot afford
to deny, especially now since we have so many more species that are at risk,
endangered, or extinct – and those numbers are growing daily! What I am doing is
adding what I can, at least, to the memory of these beautiful creatures so that,
in some fashion, they are never going to be forgotten.
First and foremost is the aspect of the Paladin characters. If you have read
book one (two through five aren’t even released yet, so relax) you will notice
that the Paladins use code name for each other. TigerObsidian, CrimsonRhino,
SageImapala, CervalDandelion, etc. Yeah, those are real code names used. There
is a reason for that. Each new Paladin, during their academy tenure, must go
through an (as yet unnamed) ceremony/ritual to find their chromatic spirit
guide. It’s pretty simple and based on some Native American beliefs in animal
spirits and spirituality. It’s this spirituality that I feel is a near-tangible
thing and why I think we need to show a little more respect to the animal
kingdom. Anyway, on top of this, the ceremony is what also grants the Paladins
their enhanced abilities to fight, hunt, and save the our world from falling
prey to evil. (Insert dramatic musical cue here. DUN DUN DUNDUUUUUUUNH!) So this
ceremony and the “silly” naming are actually a viable part of the story and
background of the heroes of Mythidria. It also helps because there are so many
more characters running about saving lives that it makes it easy to find them in
my head and write about them.
Anyway, more about the animal kingdom and Mythidria - why? Who would these
brave men and women keep traversing dimensions to save the Earth? Well, it’s not
just because of the human race. Light knows it’s not really deserving of it. No,
it’s the Earth itself. In “Mythidria” the Earth is the lynchpin for the whole
multiverse. No matter how many changes are made on this planet of ours, it is
still the same Earth. In other quantum realities Earth has become all robotic,
or the human race is gone, or the world is a complete wasteland – or is gone
completely. The Earth in the novels is the PRIME Earth – the one which all
others originate from. It’s the one with the greatest threat from the evil of
the Necromancer Guild, the Queen, and Acheron. If the Prime Earth falls, then
all of reality, ours, Quantum shell 234, quantum shell 987, etc. all fall as
well. Yeah, I know that’s been done by DC and Marvel, and almost in the same
way, but they don’t acknowledge their quantum realities in their stories. Here,
in the Mythidria books, they are. Thing is, our heroes don’t arrive to save the
day for just the human race. They do it for ALL life on Earth. Animals included.
I’ll actually be explaining this in some detail in book #2. Anyway, animals are
a big part of the motivations of our heroes.
Next, are the other characters that are included in the novels. They are the
mythical creatures of myth and legend you read about as a kid. Dragons,
Centaurs, dwarves, elves, etc. all play a part as the ruling body of Danitrae -
the world where Mythidria exists. Sh*t there’s even an alien “Federation”
involved because they know how dire things are in the fight against evil. The
”Council of Sentients” have the knowledge it takes to keep the Paladins in
business with magic, technology, resources, and the like to keep the planet
Earth safe and secure. Their primary motivation is SOLELY the animal kingdoms.
The beasts of the field and the sea are THEIR CHILDREN – so to speak. All of the
critters that inhabit our planet are directly linked (in one way or another)
with the mystical sentients and magical creatures we read about in books or saw
in movies. It’s this direct link that keeps the Dragona, Manticorri, Elves,
Dwarves, Centaurii, Oceanic, and all the others motivated to keep this world
safe.
Finally, animals will play a much more significant part with Mic. If you have
read the book, you know that he is called TigerObsidian for a reason. There will
be others like him introduced into the series. There are other forces, much more
powerful than the mystical creatures of Danitrae, that are necessary to end the
threat of Acheron, who (when he was originally vanquished) was damned near
omnipotent and challenging creation itself. Imagine, (SPOILER HERE) a select
group of individuals like the Paladins only powered up to serious levels that
can shake the pillars of Heaven itself. But it’s the spirits of certain animals
that bind themselves to these select individuals as the spirits are in tune with
what these powers are and the individuals involved, making certain endowments
much easier to transition into while making it obvious that said changes are
difficult beyond words.
So, there it is. THAT is a very large reason as to why I write what I am
writing, and some facets of the story that I have never, ever disclosed to
anybody and, most importantly, why there are certain plot items included in the
series that I feel very strongly about.
I love animals, all of them (well, insects not so much, but they also have a
place in existence and I cannot deny that no matter how icky I think they are.)
and I think if I can help keep the memory of them alive in the future, then I
think I’ve done my job in not only contributing to their lives past present and
future, but doing it in an interesting and entertaining way.
